Not professional advice

Emergency Water Source provides general preparedness information and is not a substitute for advice from a medical professional, your local emergency officials or your water utility.

No page here creates a professional relationship of any kind. Decisions about your health, your household’s needs or the safety of a particular water supply should be made with the appropriate professional or authority.

During an active emergency

In an active emergency or water advisory, instructions from local officials and your water utility take priority over anything on Emergency Water Source.

This is general preparedness information, not a substitute for instructions from local emergency officials or your water utility during an active event. For a medical emergency, call 911.

Water safety and treatment

Emergency Water Source covers storing water that is already safe; it does not tell you how to treat or disinfect water, and it cannot tell you whether a specific supply is safe.

If water may contain fuel, chemicals, salts or other non-microbial contamination, do not assume boiling or disinfection makes it safe. For treatment, follow current guidance from the CDC and the EPA.

Individual needs vary

The planning figures on Emergency Water Source are baseline allowances, and your household may need more.

Needs can be higher for infants, children, older adults, pregnancy, illness, pets, hot conditions and physically demanding activity. Where an authority publishes no figure for a group, such as pets, our pages say so rather than inventing one.

Calculations and figures

Figures on Emergency Water Source are either quoted from a named source or calculated from one, and calculations are labelled as calculations.

A calculated figure, such as a filled container’s weight, is arithmetic, not an agency recommendation. Official guidance changes, so check the linked source and the page’s review date.

No hands-on testing

Emergency Water Source does not own, test or inspect the products it discusses; comparisons are based on manufacturer documentation.

Where a manufacturer does not publish a specification, we print “not stated by the manufacturer” rather than estimate it. Always read the manufacturer’s own instructions before use.

Affiliate relationship

Emergency Water Source is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program; as an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases.

This does not change the price you pay or what we say about a product. Details are in our Affiliate Disclosure.
